8 Pillars of Holistic Wellness

Holistic health is a concept that focuses on the overall well-being of an individual, taking into account their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. It involves the integration of different aspects of a person’s life to achieve optimal health and wellness. The goal of holistic health is to promote balance and harmony in all aspects of a person’s life, as well as to prevent illness and promote overall well-being. This approach recognises that the mind and body are interconnected and that achieving optimal health requires addressing both physical and emotional factors.

Holistic Health focuses on the Overall Wellness of 8 aspects of life.

1. Physical

Physical wellness focuses on a person’s physical body. Not just exercise and other physical activity but also, diet/nutrition, quality of sleep and even hygiene. 

MOVEMENT: Moving your body daily is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. Regular physical activity helps to improve your cardiovascular health, increase your strength and flexibility, reduce your risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, and improve your overall quality of life.

In addition to the physical benefits, daily movement can also have a positive impact on your mental health. Exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve mood, and increase self-esteem. Regular physical activity can also help you manage stress and improve your cognitive function, including memory and focus.

NUTRITION: Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for overall health and well-being. A healthy diet provides the body with essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, that help to prevent disease and promote optimal function of the body’s organs and systems.

Eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, can help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. A healthy diet can also help to maintain a healthy weight, boost energy levels, improve mood, and support cognitive function.

SLEEP: Sleep is essential for physical health, mental health, cognitive function, physical performance, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life. It’s important to prioritise getting enough sleep each night to ensure that we’re taking care of our bodies and minds.

HYGIENE: There are many diseases that can be spread through improper hygiene. One’s physical wellness is determined by how well we take care of our bodies and what better way to take care than keeping it clean? 

2. Emotional

Emotional wellness refers to the state of being emotionally balanced, resilient, and able to cope with the various challenges and stressors of life. It involves understanding and managing your emotions in a healthy way, developing strong relationships, and having a positive outlook on life.

3. Social

Social wellness refers to the state of one’s social connections, relationships, and interactions with others. It involves developing and maintaining healthy relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and the community at large. Social wellness is an essential component of overall well-being, as it helps individuals feel connected, supported, and fulfilled. It also focuses on how we communicate with those around us. Are the relationships in our lives supported by connection and open communication?

4. Spiritual

Spiritual wellness is the aspect of overall well-being that focuses on developing a sense of purpose and meaning in life. It involves finding a sense of inner peace, connecting with something greater than oneself, and understanding one’s values, beliefs, and morals.

Spiritual wellness can be achieved through a variety of practices and activities, such as meditation, prayer, yoga, spending time in nature, volunteering, and engaging in self-reflection. It is important to note that spiritual wellness is a highly personal and individualised experience, and what works for one person may not work for another.

5. Environmental

Environmental wellness refers to the state of well-being resulting from a positive relationship between an individual and their environment. It involves an awareness of the interdependence between the individual, the community, and the natural environment, and the ability to take actions that promote sustainable living and the protection of the environment.

Environmental wellness encompasses a range of factors, including access to clean water and air, healthy food, safe housing, and transportation, as well as the preservation of natural resources and ecosystems. It also involves an understanding of how human activities impact the environment and the ability to make informed choices to minimise harm.

Everything in your environment can impact your well-being and it’s important that you feel that way about each room in your home. At, for example, you can get blackout blinds to help you sleep. You can dress your windows to reflect the environment that makes you most at ease. Window treatments matter, and you must remember this when it comes to decor.

It involves living in a place where you feel supported but keeping in mind the energy you bring to that space as well.

6. Intellectual

Intellectual wellness refers to the state of being mentally stimulated, engaged, and continually expanding one’s knowledge and skills. It involves being open to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives and actively seeking out opportunities for learning and growth. Intellectual wellness can be achieved through various activities such as reading, attending lectures, participating in discussions, engaging in creative pursuits, and exploring new areas of interest.

Some benefits of intellectual wellness include:

  1. Increased creativity and critical thinking skills
  2. Enhanced problem-solving abilities
  3. Improved memory and cognitive function
  4. Greater self-awareness and personal development
  5. Enhanced communication and interpersonal skills

To promote intellectual wellness, it is important to engage in activities that challenge and stimulate your mind regularly. This can include reading books and articles, listening to podcasts, solving puzzles and brain teasers, taking courses or attending workshops, learning a new language, engaging in creative pursuits such as writing or painting, and seeking out opportunities for intellectual discussion and debate.

Financial wellness refers to the state of being in good financial health. It means having a sense of financial security, being able to meet your financial obligations, and having enough money to cover your basic needs and some discretionary spending.

Achieving financial wellness requires a combination of factors, such as:

  1. Managing your money effectively: This involves creating and sticking to a budget, tracking your expenses, and prioritizing your spending to ensure you have enough money to cover your essential needs.
  2. Saving for the future: Building an emergency fund and contributing regularly to retirement accounts can help ensure you are prepared for unexpected expenses and have a secure financial future.
  3. Avoiding debt or managing it wisely: Taking on too much debt can be a major source of financial stress. Managing debt responsibly involves understanding the terms and conditions of loans or credit cards, making payments on time, and avoiding high-interest debt.
  4. Investing wisely: Investing can be an effective way to grow your wealth over the long term, but it requires a careful understanding of risk and reward. Understanding investment options and seeking the advice of financial experts can help ensure you are making smart investment decisions.

8. Occupational

Occupational wellness refers to the aspect of wellness that involves finding satisfaction and fulfilment in one’s work or chosen career. It involves having a sense of purpose and meaning in one’s job, feeling productive and engaged, and having a good work-life balance.

Achieving occupational wellness can involve a variety of factors, such as having a job that aligns with one’s values and interests, feeling valued and respected by colleagues and employers, having opportunities for professional development and growth, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

When individuals experience occupational wellness, they tend to have higher levels of job satisfaction, greater motivation and productivity, and improved mental and physical health. Additionally, occupational wellness can contribute to overall life satisfaction and well-being.
