Music producer Rick Rubin uses an exercise to help songwriters who are having a hard time writing new material for themselves, he asks them to:
- Choose an artist that they like as a reference.
- Then write a song for them to sing.
He finds that it helps them to remove their self-imposed boundaries.
Once you’re no longer creating for yourself, you’re often able to get out of your own head long enough to get back to creating.
If you’re in a rut creatively or in your work and you can’t find a spark of motivation to do your own thing – do someone else’s thing.
