With the cost of modern living increasing every year, you may be wondering how you will ever be able to own your own home. For this reason, more and more people are getting involved in the ‘tiny house’ movement and creating a home they can afford.
Building a tiny house brings a lot more benefits besides affordability. Not only are they much better for our environment with less strain on natural resources, but they can be built to be sustainable. They also promote a simple and uncomplicated lifestyle, with people enjoying downsizing their lives and having uncluttered spaces. #TinyHouseLiving
Benefits of Living in a Small Home
There are endless benefits of living in a small house, such as:
Heating and Cooling
It costs so much less to heat and cool a smaller home.
Cleaning and Maintaining
It takes me about half an hour to clean our entire home and about an hour and a half, to deep clean it. Less cleaning is a HUGE benefit to living in a small space, especially if you are not into cleaning, however, I AM. I LOVE looking after our Home – I find it therapeutic and feel I am bringing forward my Mum’s legacy as a homemaker.
Maintaining a smaller home is going to be less expensive because there are fewer things to break: fewer windows, fewer walls, fewer doors, and less square footage on the roof.

You still have the items inside the house that would be the same as appliances, but with fewer rooms to fill with furniture, there are fewer times they might need to be replaced as well.
How to Live Comfortably in a Small House
The most important way to be comfortable in a small house is to limit the amount of stuff you have. Call it decluttering or minimalism if you wish, but everything you own must have a place where it lives comfortably.
Overabundance has no place in a small space. I am not a fan of clutter and disorganisation. When you have limited closet space, you tend to have fewer clothes. I discovered a Capsule Wardrobe years ago and found it so helpful living with one small closet.
Declutter Often
I keep a bin in my bathroom for things I no longer need, use or add value to my life. I do a declutter at least once a week to stay on top of things and believe it or not, every time, I manage to part ways with quite a few things.
Organise Your Small House
The organisation in a small house is a big deal. A place for everything and everything in its place is not just a cliche. I love organising our Home and am constantly trying to learn new ways to curate it according to our lifestyle and needs.
Some quick tips:
- Give everything you own, a home
- Pick up after yourself. Space will get so much smaller if it’s messy
- Declutter regularly
- Drawers and closets are valuable, use organisers to make the most of them
- Utilise or create shelves inside closets.
- Invest in bins and baskets, but only enough for the purpose, the more storage you have, the more you’ll likely fill it up with stuff
- Skinny hangers are a must when hanging clothes
- Consider verticle space for hooks and shelves.
- Don’t forget places like the back of the doors and under the beds
- Consider the KonMarie method of folding to take advantage of every inch
- Look for items that have more than one use like an Air Fryer Mini Oven
Keep Décor Simple
Home & interiors have been a big thing for me as far as I can remember. As I practice seasonal living, styling our Home aligned with the seasons is a must. I’ve been using mostly the same seasonal décor pieces for years, however, I tend to add a new piece or two every year and then part ways with pieces I don’t feel anymore (the one in, two out rule applies here).
The basic rules for keeping your décor simple are:
- Neutral, light paint colours will make it feel open and airy. Utilise natural light as much as possible, and keep furniture pieces simple and light.
- Do not overdo the furniture. Try to get by with the least amount of furniture pieces as you possibly can. This will help to make the room look less cluttered.
- Allow wall art also to be simple. Nothing too big or bulky. Sometimes wall space is limited, so choose things that you love like photos of people rather than ornate objects and art.
I hope you found this helpful. And remember – tiny houses are all the rage.
