As we settle into this autumn season, it’s important to take some time for ourselves and commit to getting some self-care in. I made a list of my favourite Autumn-themed self-care activities I challenge you to make time for this season.
Spend some time in nature
I love Autumn because as the leaves change, the beauty of nature is brought right into our neighbourhood for us to enjoy. It doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary, but make sure you go outside to enjoy a morning coffee, go on a walk, hike, bike ride, or whatever floats your boat to soak it all in!
Have a cosy night by the fireplace
You know that fireplace you have that you never use? Make it a point to use it this Autumn season! Cuddle up with a blanket, Autumn-scented candle, and hot chocolate for a cosy night in. I bought a secondhand electric fireplace from FB Marketplace earlier this year and am looking forward to using it in the coming seasons.
If you don’t have a fireplace, did you know Netflix has a 4K fireplace you can put on your TV?
Get some new skincare to prepare your skin for the colder weather
I don’t know about you, but I can already feel my skin getting drier. Invest in some hydrating skin care products this Autumn and pamper your skin. Having hydrated and moisturized skin makes such a difference as the weather starts to turn.
Try out a new Autumn recipe and indulge
You don’t need to wait until Thanksgiving to make a decadent Autumn meal! Find some comfort food you’d like to try and make it for a homemade meal for just you. It’s a good opportunity to try a new recipe for future reference!
Paint your nails with Autumn colours
Step out of your usual rotation and try a new Autumn colour. Not only is this a relaxing activity in itself, but it will make you feel so confident and put together when picking Autumn outfits.
Treat yourself to a pumpkin spice latte
Many of us try to save money by less frequent visits to Starbucks, but if you can, treat yourself to an autumn-inspired beverage this year at least once. Pumpkin spice is a classic, but there are so many others I want to try like this season. Khushi and I have a movie date at the cinema with our chosen seasonal drink and treats.
Start your morning by writing a gratitude list
We celebrate our thanks on Thanksgiving, but it would do us a lot of good to think of the things we are thankful for way more frequently than just once a year. One morning this Autumn, try starting your day with a gratitude list.
That means before doing anything else, grab a pen and paper and write down 5 things you’re thankful for in life. They can be big or small things, the key is acknowledging them. Better yet, make a habit of this and you’ll see improvements in your mood and wellbeing over time.
Take a scenic drive to admire the Autumn foliage
Hit the road and embark on a scenic drive to witness nature’s stunning display of colours. As you wind through tree-lined roads adorned with shades of red, orange, and gold, you’ll feel a sense of awe and tranquillity, making it the perfect self-care activity for relaxation and reflection.
Have a movie night with classic autumn films
Cosy up on the sofa with a mug of hot cocoa and indulge in a movie night filled with beloved autumn classics. From heartwarming tales to spooky thrillers, these movies evoke nostalgia and create a cosy atmosphere perfect for snuggling up and unwinding. I’ve curated a playlist with Hallmark movies and some of my favourite movies (which I have paid for) on YouTube
Enjoy a hot cup of herbal tea
Sipping on a steaming cup of herbal tea is like wrapping yourself in a cosy blanket from the inside out. The warmth and comforting flavours of these Autumn beverages offer a moment of tranquillity and allow you to pause, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of the season.
Visit a pumpkin patch and choose your pumpkin
Step into a pumpkin patch and let your inner child run wild as you search for the perfect pumpkin. Selecting a pumpkin that speaks to you can be an exciting and therapeutic experience, igniting creativity and anticipation for festive decorations or carving designs.
This is a tradition Khushi and I started a couple of years ago and we love it.
Capture the beauty of Autumn by taking photographs of the changing leaves
Autumn offers a picturesque backdrop for photography enthusiasts. Grab your camera or smartphone and embark on a leaf-peeping adventure, capturing the vibrant hues and intricate details of autumn foliage. This creative and mindful activity allows you to appreciate nature’s fleeting beauty and express your artistic vision.
Have a DIY spa day with homemade face masks and scrubs
Treat yourself to a pampering session without leaving the comfort of your home. Whip up nourishing face masks and scrubs using natural ingredients like pumpkin, cinnamon, or honey. Indulging in self-care rituals that promote relaxation and rejuvenation will leave you feeling refreshed and radiant.
Attend a local Autumn festival or fair
Immerse yourself in the lively spirit of Autumn by attending a local festival or fair. From pumpkin carving contests to live music and food stalls, these events offer a vibrant atmosphere filled with laughter, entertainment, and an opportunity to create cherished memories with friends and family.
Try out seasonal essential oils in a diffuser for a comforting ambience
Fill your living space with the soothing scents of Autumn using essential oils like cinnamon, clove, or orange. Aromatherapy creates a cosy and inviting ambience, promoting relaxation, balance, and a sense of well-being during autumn.
Have a picnic in the park surrounded by Autumn colours
Pack a basket with your favourite Autumn treats and venture to a nearby park or garden for a delightful picnic. Enjoy the crisp air, vibrant foliage, and seasonal flavours while basking in the serenity of nature – a perfect way to combine self-care, nourishment, and outdoor enjoyment.
Read a book or listen to an audiobook with an Autumn theme
Curl up with a captivating book that transports you to the enchanting world of autumn. Whether it’s a cosy mystery set against a backdrop of falling leaves or a heartwarming tale of love and self-discovery, immersing yourself in an Autumn-themed book is a delightful way to unwind and nourish your imagination.
Collect colourful leaves and press them to create artwork or decorations
Take a stroll outdoors and collect a variety of vibrant leaves that catch your eye. Once you’ve gathered your treasures, press them between the pages of a heavy book to preserve their beauty. Use these dried leaves to create charming artwork, decorate your living space, or even craft your own unique Autumn-inspired greeting cards.
Take a scenic hike in the crisp Autumn air
Put on your walking shoes and venture into nature for a rejuvenating hike. The cool, crisp air of autumn combined with the stunning landscapes and vibrant foliage creates the perfect backdrop for an invigorating outdoor adventure. Take in the sights, breathe in the fresh air, and let the beauty of nature nourish your mind, body, and soul.
Visit a farmer’s market and pick up fresh Autumnal season produce
Explore the abundance of Autumn produce by visiting a local farmers market. Browse through the colourful array of pumpkins, apples, squash, and other seasonal fruits and vegetables. Supporting local farmers not only allows you to enjoy fresh and nutritious ingredients but also fosters a sense of community and sustainability.
Watch a classic Halloween movie and enjoy some popcorn
Embrace the spooky side of Autumn by settling in for a cosy movie night featuring classic Halloween films. From family-friendly favourites to chilling horror flicks, these movies provide a nostalgic and thrilling experience. Pair your movie night with a bowl of freshly popped popcorn for the ultimate indulgence.
Try a new Autumn-inspired makeup look
Get creative with your makeup routine and experiment with an Autumn-inspired look. Play with warm, earthy eyeshadows, deep berry or plum lip colours, and radiant bronzer to enhance your features and embrace the colours of the season. Express your style and have fun with your makeup as a form of self-expression and self-care.
Take a yoga or meditation class to relax and centre yourself
Autumn is a time of transition and reflection, making it the perfect season to incorporate mindfulness practices into your self-care routine. Attend a yoga class or engage in meditation to find inner peace, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of balance amidst the changing seasons. These practices provide a sanctuary for self-reflection, self-awareness, and emotional well-being.
Carve Jack-O-Lanterns for Halloween
Unleash your creativity and channel your inner artist by carving or decorating pumpkins for Halloween. Engaging in this festive tradition allows you to express your individuality, bond with loved ones, and embrace the playful and imaginative spirit of the season. Whether you go for classic jack-o’-lantern faces or intricate designs, the process of transforming a pumpkin into a work of art is both relaxing and satisfying.
Create a cosy reading nook with warm blankets and pillows
Design a cosy sanctuary where you can escape into the pages of a good book. Arrange soft blankets, plush pillows, and warm lighting in a corner of your home to create the perfect reading nook. This dedicated space allows you to unwind, disconnect from technology, and immerse yourself in captivating stories while cocooned in comfort.
Make homemade apple or pumpkin pie from scratch
Delight in the sweet aromas and flavours of Autumn by baking a homemade apple or pumpkin pie. Roll up your sleeves, mix the ingredients, and savour the satisfaction of creating a delectable dessert from scratch. The process itself is a therapeutic activity, and the reward of enjoying a warm slice of pie is the ultimate self-care treat.
Write letters or send care packages to loved ones
Spread love and thoughtfulness by sending handwritten letters or care packages to your loved ones. In the age of digital communication, receiving a heartfelt note or surprise package brings joy and a sense of connection. Taking the time to express gratitude, share updates, or simply let someone know you’re thinking of them cultivates meaningful relationships and fosters a sense of community.
Take a scenic bike ride through the countryside
Enjoy the crisp Autumn air and the stunning landscapes by embarking on a scenic bike ride through the countryside. Pedal along meandering paths, soak in the beauty of rolling hills and colourful foliage, and feel the invigorating breeze on your face. This active and immersive experience allows you to embrace nature, boost your mood, and invigorate your body and mind.
Attend a local harvest festival or Oktoberfest celebration
Immerse yourself in the festive spirit of Autumn by attending a local harvest festival or Oktoberfest celebration. These lively events offer a rich cultural experience, featuring music, traditional dances, artisan crafts, and a variety of seasonal foods and drinks. Engaging in the festivities allows you to celebrate the abundance of the season, connect with your community, and create lasting memories.
Have a bonfire and make s’mores with friends or family
Gather your loved ones around a crackling bonfire, toast marshmallows, and indulge in the classic delight of s’mores. The warmth of the fire, the laughter of companionship, and the gooey deliciousness of the treats create a cosy and joyful atmosphere. This communal activity fosters connections, creates lasting memories, and adds a touch of magic to your Autumn evenings.
