SHOW NOTES
Hello, and welcome back to Live a Well-Designed Life. I’m Kiran, your host and guide on this journey of intentional living and self-discovery. It’s February, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, we’re shifting the focus inward. This month’s theme is all about creating a self-love practice. To kick things off, we’re exploring what self-love truly means and why it’s the foundation of a fulfilling life.
Today, we’ll dive into the essence of self-love, why it’s so important for your well-being and relationships, and practical ways to start building a self-love practice that feels authentic to you. Let’s redefine love, starting with the one relationship that matters most: the one with yourself.
1: What is Self-Love?
Defining Self-Love:
Self-love is often misunderstood as selfishness or arrogance, but it’s quite the opposite. It’s about respecting yourself, accepting your flaws and strengths, and nurturing your mind, body, and spirit. It’s the ability to show yourself the same compassion and care that you’d give a loved one.
Why Self-Love Matters:
When you love yourself, you set the tone for how others treat you. It impacts your confidence, decision-making, and how you show up in the world. Think of it as the foundation of a house – without it, everything else can crumble under pressure.
Myths About Self-Love:
Let’s debunk a common myth: self-love isn’t about always feeling positive. It’s about showing up for yourself even on the hard days. It’s a commitment to prioritise your well-being and growth, no matter what.
2: Why is Self-Love Difficult for Many of Us?
Societal and Personal Barriers:
Many of us struggle with self-love because we’re taught to prioritise others or achieve external validation. Society often equates self-worth with productivity, appearance, or success, making it hard to feel ‘enough.’
The Inner Critic:
Another barrier is our inner critic – that voice that tells us we’re not good enough. It’s normal, but if left unchecked, it can erode our self-esteem. The first step to self-love is recognising and challenging this voice.
Healing Old Patterns:
Sometimes, our self-love journey is shaped by past experiences or relationships. Healing and unlearning those patterns take time, but it’s a powerful act of love for yourself.
3: Building a Self-Love Practice
Start with Awareness:
The first step is awareness. Notice how you talk to yourself throughout the day. Are your thoughts kind and supportive, or critical and harsh? Awareness is key to changing the narrative.
Daily Affirmations:
Affirmations can be a powerful tool. Start your day by looking in the mirror and saying something positive about yourself, like, ‘I am worthy of love and respect,’ or ‘I honour my needs and boundaries.’ It may feel awkward at first, but over time, these statements will sink in.
Self-Care as Self-Love:
Self-love isn’t just about mindset – it’s also about action. Make time for things that nourish you, whether that’s taking a walk, enjoying a hobby, or setting boundaries to protect your energy. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
4: Small Steps to Get Started
Create a Self-Love Ritual:
Start small by dedicating 10–15 minutes each day to something that makes you feel good. It could be journaling, meditating, or even dancing to your favourite song. The key is consistency – make it a non-negotiable part of your routine.
Practice Gratitude for Yourself:
Take a moment to appreciate yourself for everything you’ve overcome and accomplished. Write down three things you’re proud of or grateful for about yourself. This simple practice can shift your mindset and strengthen your self-love.
Celebrate Progress:
Self-love is a journey, not a destination. Celebrate every small step you take toward prioritising yourself, even if it’s just saying no to something that doesn’t serve you. These small acts add up to big changes.
Today, we explored what self-love is, why it’s so vital, and simple ways to start building a practice that feels true to you. Remember, self-love isn’t about being perfect – it’s about showing up for yourself every day with compassion and care.
Here’s your journaling prompt for this week: ‘What does self-love look and feel like to me? How can I start practising it in small ways this week?’ Take a few moments to reflect and write from the heart.
