There’s a quiet shift that happens in summer. The sun lingers longer, the pace softens, and for many of us in midlife, it sparks a question: What does my work, my creativity, and my purpose look like now?
I’ve asked myself this often. Midlife, with its beautiful yet confronting transitions – perimenopause, menopause, shifting identities – can stir uncertainty. The work that once fulfilled us may feel heavy. The roles we’ve carried may no longer fit. But here’s what I’ve discovered: midlife is not an ending. It’s an invitation to create differently, with more alignment, more soul, more ease.
And summer? Summer is the season to begin.

1. Redefining Productivity in Midlife
For years, I believed productivity meant constant doing – long hours, ticking boxes, pushing through exhaustion. But menopause stripped that belief bare. Some days, my energy wanes. My focus drifts. And I’ve learned to stop fighting it.
True productivity in midlife honours our cyclical energy. It flows with the seasons – some moments for action, others for reflection, always rooted in presence.
Try this: Start your workday by asking, “What would feel aligned today – action or rest, structure or softness?”

2. Cultivating Creative Flow in the Summer Light
There’s something about working outside – a notebook on the terrace, ideas scribbled under the shade of a tree, coffee in hand as the morning breeze stirs possibility.
I’ve found my most inspired moments often arrive when I slow down – when I let nature, beauty, and spaciousness ignite my creativity.
Try this: Design a small summer workspace – by a window, in your garden, at your favourite café. Let your environment fuel your ideas.

3. Embracing Imperfect, Joyful Creation
Perimenopause taught me this: You don’t have to be perfect to be powerful. You don’t need to “have it all figured out” to begin. Your work – whether it’s writing, coaching, art, or simply curating your home – can be raw, evolving, and still deeply valuable.
This summer, I’m leaning into imperfect creativity:
- A short poem scribbled at sunrise
- A new recipe shared with loved ones
- A video filmed in natural light, unpolished but honest
It’s not about flawless outcomes – it’s about joyful expression.
Journaling prompt:
“Where am I holding back my creative voice – and how can I set it free this summer?”

4. Protecting Your Creative Energy with Boundaries
I’ve learned that my best work doesn’t emerge from burnout. It blooms when I protect my energy, set gentle boundaries, and honour my natural rhythm.
That means saying no to draining commitments, carving out quiet time, and trusting that rest fuels creativity.
Try this: Block small pockets of time – 15 minutes, 30 minutes – for focused, soulful work. Let it be enough for today.
