Perimenopause Didn’t Break Me. It Woke Me Up

I woke up this morning with a strong pull to write this. The kind you don’t ignore. We talk about perimenopause and menopause as something to dread. And I won’t sugar-coat it; parts of it can feel brutal. I’m 48 now and around three and a half years into perimenopause, probably longer if I’m honest. This transition doesn’t politely wait until our fifties. Many of us are already in it before we even have language for what’s happening.

Most conversations focus on the symptoms. The hot flushes. The anxiety. The broken sleep. The brain fog. I’ve experienced all of it. You can read the books, listen to the podcasts, follow the advice, and it can still hit you like a wave you didn’t see coming. A bit like childbirth in that way. Preparation helps, but the body has its own agenda.

What we don’t talk about enough is how perimenopause changes you beneath the surface. At your roots. At your core.

I don’t feel like the same woman I was five years ago. Not because something has been lost, but because something has been stirred. Awakened. At times, it’s felt like my soul being nudged awake, sometimes gently, sometimes with force.

Other cultures understand this. In Chinese medicine, menopause is called The Second Spring. In Japanese, Konenki speaks of renewal and energy. That feels far closer to my lived experience than the doom-laden stories we’re fed.

So if you’re unravelling right now, questioning everything, wondering who you even are anymore, hear this clearly: you are not breaking. You are becoming.
Hold on.
Listen.
The light returns.

And when it does, you may find yourself bolder, clearer, and more anchored in your truth than ever before.
