Autumn, You Understand Me: A Love Letter to the Season That Speaks to My Soul

Summer, it’s not you – it’s me. We’ve had fun, truly. Long days, light clothes, that golden evening glow. We’ve made memories. But as the light begins to shift and the days grow shorter, I feel the quiet call of someone who knows me better.

Autumn understands me.

The first crisp morning, the scent of damp earth and distant bonfires, that familiar rustle underfoot, it’s like my body exhales for the first time in months. I feel seen. Held. Home.

Autumn, You Understand Me: A Love Letter to the Season That Speaks to My Soul

The Romance of Autumn

I’ve always adored the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but in midlife, my love for Autumn has deepened into something almost sacred. It’s not just about aesthetic pleasures, though I won’t lie, oversized knits, crackling fires, and cinnamon-scented candles do make my heart flutter. It’s more than that.

Autumn mirrors where I am in life.

It teaches me that letting go can be beautiful. That slowing down isn’t failure, it’s wisdom. Those transitions, though tender and bittersweet, are also rich with meaning.

A Season for the Soul

There’s something about Autumn that seems to understand the rhythm of midlife: a pull toward depth, a desire for truth, a need to strip back what no longer fits.

The season whispers: Rest. Simplify. Come home to yourself.

And so I do.

I start lighting candles earlier in the day. I rearrange the corners of my home to feel cosier, softer, more me. I simmer soups with seasonal veg, wrap myself in shawls, and pour endless cups of tea. I swap quick scrolls for slower reads. I let the wind take my thoughts as I walk through the woods.

Hygge, The Norwegian Way

As a Scandinavian (Norwegian, to be exact), hygge is stitched into my soul. But it’s in Autumn when it truly comes alive.

To me, hygge is not just about fairy lights and cosy blankets – it’s about warmth in every sense of the word. It’s a warm room after a chilly walk. A long chat over slow-cooked stew. It’s the permission to slow down, soften the edges, and lean into comfort without guilt.

It’s curling up with a book and a hot drink while the wind rattles the windows. It’s shared laughter around the dinner table. It’s solitude and connection. It’s the art of being at peace with yourself.

10 Things I Love About Autumn

Whether you’re already a devotee of the season or still warming up to it, here are the things I find irresistible:

1. Slowing Down

Longer nights invite longer rest. I let my system unwind through journaling, stretching, books, and simply being. Autumn gives me permission to breathe again.

2. The Weather

I find the wild swings of Autumn weather strangely comforting. Misty mornings, moody skies, the smell of wet leaves, it soothes my nervous system like nothing else.

3. The Leaves

There’s magic in watching the leaves change. It’s a moving meditation, proof that letting go can be luminous.

4. The Atmosphere

It’s mystical. Mornings shimmer with dew, fog wraps around the landscape like a blanket, and cobwebs turn into delicate art under the morning light.

5. Lighting the First Fire

That first fire of the season always feels ceremonial. I build it slowly, mindfully, and it never fails to make me feel deeply, primally rooted.

6. Candlelight and Solar Lanterns

When the fire’s not lit, I turn to soft lighting, solar lanterns, warm fairy lights, and beeswax candles. It’s amazing how something so simple can change the entire energy of a room.

7. Bedtime Bliss

My bedtime ritual gets more intentional. Reading, amber lighting, a touch of lavender oil, it’s a sanctuary at the end of each day.

8. Layering Up

Give me a big scarf, a cosy jumper, and thick socks over a strappy summer dress any day. My body feels more supported, more held.

9. Comfort Drinks

Herbal teas, broths, cacao, I lean into warmth. Each cup is like a grounding spell.

10. Hearty Food

Soups, stews, roasted veg… Autumn cooking nourishes my body and soul. There’s a simplicity and slowness to it that feels just right.

Autumn – You Speak to My Soul

I was born near the Autumn Equinox. Of course I was. It’s the season where light and dark find balance. And that’s what I’m learning too: how to hold both.

The joy and the grief.
The stillness and the movement.
The letting go and the rooting in.

So yes, Summer will always have its place. But Autumn? Autumn is the one who knows my heart; it’s my Soulmate season!

Which parts of Autumn speak to you most right now?

Let’s make this a conversation. Share your Autumn rituals with me in the comments.

And if this season brings up more emotion than ease, you’re not alone.

Let’s go gently, together.
