There was a time in midlife when I realised I was making money moves out of autopilot – impulse buying, chasing trends, or spending on things that didn’t light me up. And it felt exhausting.
Then I discovered a powerful lens on spending: Living Within My Means, as in consciously sparing, intentional, value‑aligned spending. It doesn’t mean deprivation – it means wielding your money thoughtfully. It’s how I began aligning my wallet with my heart, without sacrificing joy or generosity.

What It Really Means to Be “Living Within Your Means”
This idea often gets a bad rap. But living within your means, as defined by financial coaches, is about strategic restraint – not miserly hoarding. It’s a tool for creating boundaries around your spending so your money can flow toward what matters most. Instead of mindless purchases, you choose quality, meaning, or legacy.
It’s not about shame – it’s about clarity. It’s asking yourself before a purchase:
- “Will this spark joy or guilt?”
- “Does this align with what I care about?”
- “Am I buying out of habit or true desire?”

Why This Resonates Even More in Midlife
Midlife brings perspective. Our priorities often shift from accumulation to experience, from appearance to legacy. The same impulse that once drove impulse buys now nudges us toward using money in ways that preserve our energy, health and agency.
By choosing a ‘Living Within My Means’ intention over convenience, I found:
- More savings to support my Self-care rituals
- Freedom from clutter and mental noise
- A sense of abundance rooted in integrity, not impulse

8 Ways I’ve Made “Living Within My Means” Work for Me

Here’s how I thoughtfully streamlined my spending – without losing the delicious parts of life:
1. I Asked: Does This Spark Joy?
Borrowing from Marie Kondo, before I buy, I ask: “Does this delight my soul?”, and from The Minimalists: “Will this add value to my life?” If not, it’s a pass. That attitude has saved me from trend chasing and offered space for meaning.
2. Budget with Intention
Rather than vague resolutions (“I’ll save more”), I set a spending framework aligned with what matters -creativity, travel, comfort, and community. This gave me clarity and permission to enjoy intentionally.

3. Define Your Financial Goals
Whether it’s funding a holistic retreat or building a legacy for loved ones, naming your goals creates momentum and confidence. I track my wins, celebrate milestones, and feel grounded knowing money serves my purpose.

4. Declutter & Sell
Letting go of unused things became a dual gift – a decluttered space and a small boost to my savings. Living within my means is also about creating flow, not holding on.

5. Spend Time, Not Money
Rather than splurging, I invest in my time: cooking nourishing meals, walking with friends, and practising yoga in the sunrise. It’s frugal living through a lens of self-care.

6. Cook More, Eat Out Less
Besides being healthier, home cooking fuels my creativity and gives solace. It’s nourishing for body and soul – and helps me avoid the cost of convenience.

7. Pay Myself First
Before money drips away, I automate savings, especially for my legacy fund and self-care rituals. It feels loving and protects me from emotional spending.
8. Save Every Windfall
Bonuses, unexpected gifts, and tax rebates – all became savings opportunities. Even small amounts add up when you’re intentional.

Building Your Own Value-Based Spending List
Here’s a quick exercise for aligning your finances with your truth:
- Write down 5–7 areas that truly matter (e.g. wellness, creativity, connection, giving, comfort).
- List how much of your monthly budget nourishes these values.
- Redirect any misaligned spending toward what deeply resonates with you.
Your guide should be: If it isn’t meaningful, say no. If it is, say yes.
My Midlife Shift: From Over-Spending to Intentional Abundance
Since 2017, I’ve been rebalancing my lifestyle spending. I redirected cash I’d been spending on clothes and trends toward:
- A nourishing online retreat
- Pillows and linens that make my home feel restful
- A fund to gift experiences to loved ones
Instead of deprivation, I felt expansion. Every purchase became a deliberate act of self-support, and my soul thanked me for it.

Final Thoughts: May Your Money Mirror Your Values
Living within my means isn’t about austerity – it’s about authenticity. It’s a midlife friend, helping us live with integrity and creativity, even in a world that applauds busyness and stuff.
Your money can become a reflection of who you are now – wise, intentional, generous, soulful. And that, Love, is financial freedom at its most beautiful.
