A couple of years ago, I found myself feeling untethered. Midlife had crept in, bringing with it the unexpected rollercoaster of perimenopause – hot flushes, mood swings, sleepless nights, and a sense of disconnection from my own body.
I’d tried supplements, walks, long baths… but nothing grounded me quite like yoga.
What started as a gentle curiosity became a lifeline. Yoga didn’t just stretch my body; it softened my resistance, stilled my mind, and reconnected me with a version of myself I’d nearly forgotten.

The Midlife Shift: Why Yoga Works
Menopause isn’t just a hormonal change – it’s a profound emotional, physical, and spiritual transition. Yoga meets you exactly where you are:
- Breathwork (Pranayama) calms anxiety and helps manage hot flushes.
- Gentle Asanas reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and ease joint pain.
- Meditation and mindfulness reconnect you with your body’s changing rhythms.
- Restorative practices teach you to slow down and listen to what you need.
Unlike high-intensity workouts, yoga honours our cyclical energy and evolving needs, especially in midlife, when everything feels like it’s shifting underfoot.

Actionable Steps to Start (or Deepen) Your Yoga Practice Today
- Begin with 10 minutes. Try a morning stretch or a calming bedtime routine.
- Explore yoga styles. Yin, Hatha, or restorative are especially supportive during menopause.
- Listen to your cycle. Some days you’ll feel strong, others you’ll need rest – both are valid.
- Create space. Set up a calming corner with a mat, cushion, and candle. Let this be your space.
- Join a local or virtual class. Community and consistency can work wonders.
