The Weekend Is Not a To-Do List

Remember when weekends meant actual rest? Now, it’s laundry. Grocery shopping. Cleaning. Cooking. Entertaining kids. Catching up on emails. Finishing what the week didn’t let you finish.

Basically, just weekdays in disguise, with maybe softer clothes.

Having been born and brought up in Norway, I’ve witnessed something so deeply different, so sacred, it changed me.

The Weekend Is Not a To-Do List

Here, the weekend is not just a pause. It’s protected. And it starts with something magical called Fredagskos, which means Friday cosiness and enjoyment.

By Friday afternoon, you’ll hear it everywhere, in the shops, from colleagues, from the neighbour waving across the fence. “Ha en god Fredagskos!” Like a blessing. A permission slip. A collective agreement to shift pace.

People switch off. The phones go quiet. Meals are shared. Candles are lit. Hygge is practised. Bread is baked. Slow music, warm lighting, comfort food, fuzzy socks, FIKA, it’s not complicated, but it is intentional.

And Sundays? Everything is shut. You can’t even pretend to be productive. You have to rest. And somehow, in that stillness, your nervous system exhales.

There’s something beautiful about a culture that honours balance and boundaries. And it has reminded me of how I’d like to spend my weekends.

The truth is, I don’t want my Saturdays to feel like punishment. I don’t want my Sundays to be spent prepping and panicking. I want presence. I want to actually live in the life I’ve worked so hard to build.

Here’s the thing: the way you spend your weekends reflects what you believe about rest.

So if you’re stuck in a loop where rest feels like laziness or something you have to “earn”, maybe it’s time to rewrite the script.

Embrace nature. Say no. Light the damn candle. Turn your phone off. Create rituals that nourish rather than drain.

Start weekending like a Scandinavian. Start living like your peace matters.
