It started with a sentence.
Earlier this year, for International Women’s Day, I asked women to finish this:
“This is Midlife by Design, Not by Default, because…”
Sixteen women responded. Different countries. Different stories. Different seasons of midlife. But underneath all of it, the same quiet knowing. That this chapter of life is asking something of us. And that most of us have been too busy, too tired, or too conditioned to answer it on our own terms.
I sat with those videos for a long time after.
And I realised that what those women had done, in ten seconds, in their own words, from their own lives, was name something that doesn’t get named enough.
The moment a woman stops defaulting and starts designing.
I’ve been building Midlife by Design for a year. Writing about it, coaching within it, podcasting from inside it. All of it is rooted in one belief: Midlife is not something that happens to you. It is something you can choose, consciously, honestly, imperfectly, to design.
But a belief needs a home in the calendar to become a movement.
So I gave it one.
Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month is an annual observance held every September, founded by Kiran Singh, Midlife Lifestyle Coach, Author, Podcast Host and Founder of Midlife by Design.
It exists to do one thing:
To shift the story.
Not the glossy, “midlife is a second spring” story, or toxic positivity wrapped in a pastel palette, but the real one. The one about a woman who has spent years managing, giving, performing, and surviving, and who is finally, quietly, asking: “What would it look like if this chapter were actually mine?“
Why September?
September is the start of autumn. The season of shedding. Leaves don’t apologise for falling. They let go of what no longer belongs to them and, in doing so, make space for what comes next. The going inward through winter. The re-emergence in spring.
This is the rhythm this month lives inside.
September is when we pause. We take stock. We ask the questions we’ve been too busy to ask. And we begin, slowly, honestly, without fanfare, to redesign.
The month sits within a larger annual rhythm: Sattva Day on 14th May (the UK’s first South Asian Women’s Midlife Awareness Day), then Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month in September, then the annual Thrive Through Midlife & Menopause Summit the following May. A full year of conversation, community, and conscious redesign.
What the month is about
This is not Menopause Awareness Month; it is not a health campaign; it is not a productivity challenge or a 30-day transformation programme; it is a cultural reframe.
Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month is a dedicated space, in the calendar and in the conversation, for women to ask bigger questions about how they are living.
Questions like:
- Am I designing this chapter, or just arriving at it?
- What am I carrying that was never mine to carry?
- What would I build if I stopped waiting for the right conditions?
- What does a life that actually feels like mine look like, now, in this season, with this body, in this particular and irreplaceable life?
These are not small questions; they are the questions midlife eventually asks every woman. This month is an invitation to ask them on purpose.
The five areas we explore
During September, the conversation moves through the five pillars of a consciously designed midlife:
- Health & overall Well-being: your body as a home, not a problem to manage.
- Personality, Character & Self-discovery: who you are becoming, and who you are finally allowing yourself to be.
- Relationships & Connections: what you owe others, and what you owe yourself.
- Money & Purpose: what your work makes possible, and whether it’s making the life you actually want.
- Quality of Life: the texture of your ordinary days, and why they matter more than we let ourselves believe.
How to take part
Share your story. Tell us, in a sentence, a paragraph, a post, what designing your midlife looks like for you. What you’re letting go of. What you’re building. What you finally decided you were allowed to want.
Use the hashtag #MidlifeByDesignNotByDefault and join a growing conversation happening across social media, Substack, and in living rooms and coffee shops wherever women are having the honest kind of conversations.
There is no registration. No sign-up form. No criteria to meet. The only requirement is a willingness to be honest.
For coaches, writers, therapists, and community leaders
If you work with women in midlife, in any capacity, in any country, this month is for your community too.
Share it. Discuss it. Bring the questions into your sessions, group programmes, newsletters, and events. The more voices in this conversation, the truer the picture becomes.

Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month was born from a piece Kiran wrote for International Women’s Day 2026, and from the quiet, unmistakable response it received from women who recognised themselves in it.
This month is the home that response deserves.
