There’s something about Autumn that calls me inward. Not in a dramatic way, but gently, persistently. Like a whisper at the edge of a morning walk, or the hush that falls just after the leaves begin to turn. This season doesn’t rush. It doesn’t ask me to do more. It simply invites me to be more present.
Over the years, especially as I’ve moved through midlife and into the tides of perimenopause, Autumn has become far more than a visual feast of colours or an excuse for another scented candle. It’s become a deeply soulful season. A time to ground, to return to myself, and, just as nature does, to shed what no longer belongs.
And one of the most powerful ways I embrace this turning of the wheel is by tending to my home. Not to impress. Not to redecorate. But to align my environment with how I want to feel. Because Autumn begins inside of us. And the home becomes a mirror of that quiet shift.

The Energy of Autumn: A Soulful Invitation
As a Lifestyle Coach and Interior Designer, I’m always exploring the intersection of seasonal living and soulful design. And Autumn? It’s the season that speaks to me most deeply. The one I return to, year after year, with open arms.
The light softens.
The pace slows.
And my desire to nest takes over completely.
It’s not about chasing trends or filling every shelf with pumpkins. It’s about creating a space that holds me exactly where I am – a woman in midlife, in motion, in reflection.

1. Clearing Space, Not Just Stuff
Before I add anything, I begin by releasing.
I walk through each room asking gently:
- What here feels heavy?
- What feels like friction?
- What no longer belongs to the woman I am becoming?
Sometimes it’s a pile of paper. Sometimes it’s a throw that no longer brings comfort. Sometimes it’s a belief about who I thought I had to be.
I don’t rush. I don’t declutter in a frenzy. I make space for my soul.

2. Rooting into Texture and Warmth
Autumn is a season of touch. soft knits, wool blankets, the weight of a book on your lap, the feel of warm tea in your hands.
I bring in earthy, tactile textures:
- Throws in muted rust and amber
- Cushions in velvet and boucle
- Beeswax candles that scent the air with clove and citrus
- Seasonal fruit in bowls – small altars of abundance
I want my home to feel like the forest – warm, grounded, and quietly magical.
3. Creating Nourishing Nooks
Midlife has taught me the power of tiny sanctuaries.
A reading chair by the window.
A journal and a candle on the bedside table.
A tea station with herbal blends that soothe my hormones.
These aren’t about aesthetics. They’re invitations. They say: You deserve rest. You’re allowed to pause.
4. Living by the Light
The light shifts in Autumn – and I shift with it. I let go of bright overheads and moved toward golden, low-level lighting. Fairy lights, lamps with soft bulbs, flickering candles. Even breakfast by candlelight.
It’s become a gentle rebellion against artificial pace. I rise with the sun. I wind down with the dusk. I let the light lead.
5. Bringing Autumn Indoors
I love bringing the outside in, literally. Foliage, seedheads, branches, pumpkins, dried leaves. Gathered on walks, arranged in jars or pressed into floating frames. A nature walk becomes both a ritual and a resource.
It’s a wonderful way to involve children, too – little pockets filled with treasures, turned into seasonal displays full of story and memory.
6. Adding Cosy Layers + Autumnal Colours
This is the time to open cupboards and reach for texture:
- Woollen throws, sheepskin rugs, chunky knit cushions.
- Add rich Autumn hues – burnt orange, ochre, russet – to warm up the energy of any space, whether through bedding, artwork, or even just a mug.
Don’t be afraid to play. Use what you have. Let the season inspire you.
7. Working with Natural Scent
Scent is such a powerful, often overlooked part of seasonal home-making. I work with essential oils and seasonal blends to anchor myself in the moment. For Autumn, I reach for:
- Cinnamon – warmth and comfort
- Juniper Berry – grounding and calm
- Cedarwood – emotional steadiness
- Bergamot – soft self-acceptance
Diffuse, anoint, blend, or simply inhale. Light a candle in the evening and let the scent tell the story of the season.

8. Decluttering for the Months Ahead
We’re heading into a season of indoor living, so now’s the perfect time to simplify. You don’t need to overhaul your home – just choose one room, one shelf, one drawer at a time. Create space not just for practical flow, but for peace.
Think: What do I want to be surrounded by as the darker months draw in?

9. Stock Up on Comfort Rituals
This season is all about comfort. For me, it’s tea blends, bath salts, hot chocolate, and an armful of books. I stock up now, so I’ve got everything I need for slower evenings and quiet weekends.
Think of it as emotional pantry prep.
Whatever comfort looks like to you, have it ready. Let it feel like a gift to your future self.
10. Making Peace with the Season You’re In
And perhaps most importantly, I let myself soften.
Midlife, menopause, Autumn – all seasons of transition.
I stopped trying to be who I was.
I start honouring who I’m becoming.
The leaves let go without resistance.
So can we.
Begin With Just One Thing…
You don’t need a full redecoration. Just begin with one corner. One candle. One slow, intentional moment.
Ask yourself:
- What does my home need to feel like a sanctuary again?
- What do I need to feel held, nurtured, and grounded?
And then let Autumn lead.
