Live a Well-Designed Life Quality of Life

How To Break Unhealthy Lifestyle Habits

There comes a point in your life when you decide enough is enough. You determine that you want to live a healthier lifestyle and feel better each day. This is a big step in the right direction for your wellbeing.

You’re not alone in wanting to break bad habits. Many people, just like yourself, go through the same struggle every day. Set goals, be patient and know that change takes time. You may not see results overnight, and that’s okay. The best way to succeed is never to give up and keep pushing forward. Below I share some tips on how to break unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Eating

Eating poorly is hard on your mind and body. Junk food and sugary drinks make you feel slow and sluggish. Change your ways by eating out less and cooking more at home. Bring your lunch to work and be mindful of your portions at each meal. Track your eating habits and find the trouble areas so you can make changes. Half the battle is being honest with yourself and taking the time to prepare meals that provide nutrition and balance in your life. Make it a lifestyle, instead of a constant battle of right and wrong.

Exercising

Daily exercise is essential to your health and wellbeing. Set workout goals and write them down. This will get you off of the couch and help you stay on track. Buy yourself new exercise clothes that get you excited to hit the gym each day. Switch it up and incorporate different exercises and activities that keep your workouts fresh. Lift weights, run or participate in a group sport. It’s likely that once you start exercising, it’ll be hard to stop. Your mood will lift, your clothes will fit better, and you’ll have more energy.

Finances

Overspending and not budgeting are quick ways to get yourself into a world of trouble with your finances. Failing to pay taxes may result in tax collection actions. If you find yourself in trouble, make the right move and contact a professional who can help you remove a tax lien. Take responsibility for your mishaps and get them corrected as soon as possible. Instead of beating yourself up for your mistakes, create a budget and make a plan for paying your bills going forward. Pay down debt and start saving for your future, so you feel more secure.

Work

Working too much not only affects your health but also puts a burden on your family. Never coming home or showing up late for activities and events is hurtful to your loved ones. Do a better job of coming up with a schedule that’s balanced and incorporates the most important responsibilities. Create a priority to-do list at work and stick to getting done what’s most important first. Keep a calendar that reflects your obligations, so you always know what’s coming up next. Avoid overcommitting yourself, because if you do someone will always end up feeling disappointed. Practice being assertive at work and learn to say no.

Watching too much Television

It’s easy to fall into the trap of watching too much television, but it’s not good for you. It also cuts into your workout and food preparation time. Think of all the calories you could be burning if you were up moving around. Pick one or two shows you enjoy watching and then turn it off for the rest of the night. Go for a walk or read a book to keep yourself occupied. Pulling yourself away from the television also leaves more time to spend with your family and friends. Start to document how much time you’re wasting in front of the television watching shows you don’t even care about.

Relationships

Unhealthy relationships will leave you feeling stressed out and drained. Do yourself a favour and remove yourself from toxic people and situations. Put yourself first for once, and focus on what makes you feel happy and healthy. Make a list of the people in your life who bring you happiness and spend more time with them. Continuing to put yourself in upsetting positions is a sure way to dampen your spirits. Stay positive and surround yourself with those who embrace your optimism.

Although bad habits are hard to break, they can be done. Give yourself a fighting chance by putting measures in place that support your new goals. Don’t worry if you can’t get to them all. Start with one or two objectives and build upon your progress. This is how to break unhealthy lifestyle habits.
