Curating Your Sacred Space: A Guide to Interior Design Styles for a Well-Lived Midlife

There’s something deeply sacred about the spaces we call home, especially in midlife. Our homes become more than just a place to live; they become a mirror of our inner world, a sanctuary where we retreat, restore, and reconnect with who we are becoming.

Over the years, my own home has evolved right alongside me. It holds layers of lived experience, shifting with the seasons and shaped by the different interior design styles that speak to my soul. My aesthetic is not easily boxed in. I draw from so many design styles, from the warmth of bohemian textures to the clean lines of Scandinavian calm, from soulful rustic elements to nostalgic touches of vintage charm. And more recently, I’ve fallen headfirst into the comforting embrace of cottagecore, that romantic, nature-soaked aesthetic that feels like a warm hug from a simpler time.

In this guide, we’ll explore popular interior design styles, how to identify your own, and why curating your home intentionally can be a deeply healing, identity-affirming act, especially for us midlife women rewriting the script of what life should feel like now.

The Most Popular Interior Design Styles (and What They Say About You)

Let’s start with a tour of the most loved interior design styles, and maybe you’ll see pieces of yourself in more than one, just like I do.

1. Scandinavian

Minimal, functional and calm. Scandinavian design is characterised by clean lines, natural light, and a neutral palette – think pale woods, soft greys, and ample white space. If you crave calm, simplicity, and order, this might be your anchor.

2. Bohemian (Boho)

Eclectic, vibrant, and free-spirited. Boho homes are filled with layers of colour, textures, plants, books, and stories. If you’re creative, soul-led, and a collector of beautiful things from travels or markets, boho likely speaks to your spirit.

3. Modern Farmhouse

Cosy, practical, and family-centred. This style seamlessly blends rustic elements, such as shiplap and vintage pieces, with modern touches. It’s ideal for those who value warmth, comfort, and tradition with a contemporary edge.

4. Mid-Century Modern

Sleek, functional, and a bit retro. Clean lines, wooden furniture with tapered legs, and earthy colour schemes define this style. It’s perfect for design lovers who like a touch of nostalgia but still want timeless appeal.

5. Industrial

Urban, edgy, and raw. Industrial design favours exposed brick, steel, concrete, and open-plan spaces. It’s bold and honest, great for people who love cities, history, and a slightly masculine aesthetic.

6. Traditional

Elegant, rich, and timeless. Think symmetry, antiques, detailed woodwork, and heritage prints. If you’re someone who loves structure, history, and comfort rooted in familiarity, this one might feel like home.

7. Contemporary

Always evolving. Contemporary design is fresh, minimalist, and often inspired by current trends. Neutral palettes and sleek finishes keep things crisp and uncluttered. Ideal for those who enjoy reinvention and innovation.

8. Cottagecore

Whimsical, nostalgic, and deeply connected to nature. Cottagecore is all about creating a slow, rural-inspired lifestyle indoors, with dried flowers, vintage crockery, soft linens, floral prints, and lots of greenery. It’s a return to simpler pleasures. Perfect for anyone craving softness, quiet, and the romantic charm of days gone by.

My Own Style? A Seasonal Soulful Blend

Truth is, I’m a little bit of everything. Some days I’m all about the calm clarity of Scandinavian lines, especially when my mind feels full. On other days, I lean into the textured layers of boho or the wildflowers and old books of cottagecore.

But what grounds it all for me is seasonal living. I change things up with the rhythms of the year. In spring, I bring in green glass vases and fresh tulips. Summer calls for breezy fabrics, sea tones, and open windows. Autumn sees the return of texture: wool, rust tones, candlelight. Winter is all about cosiness: layered throws, warm woods, and fairy lights.

I style not just for aesthetics, but for energy. How I want to feel. What my soul needs. And that changes, just like the seasons do.

Why Your Home Style Matters (More Than You Think)

The way we style our homes isn’t frivolous. It’s a form of self-care, self-expression, and self-definition. In midlife, especially, when we’re shedding old identities and reshaping our lives, the home becomes a powerful canvas.

A cluttered space often reflects a cluttered mind. A home that feels cold or chaotic can keep us disconnected from ourselves. But a space that reflects your values, honours your pace, and soothes your senses? That’s where magic happens.

It’s where we come back to ourselves.

Practical Tips for Styling Your Home Intentionally

Whether you’re starting fresh or slowly evolving your space, here are some practical ways to style your home in alignment with your soul and the seasons:

  • Start with one room. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Begin with the room you spend the most time in.
  • Create a seasonal corner. A small shelf or table where you change objects with the seasons, a candle, a vase of foraged branches, a meaningful quote.
  • Declutter gently. Let go of items that no longer align with who you are or how you live. No pressure. Just one item at a time.
  • Layer intentionally. Use throws, cushions, rugs, and art to add depth and texture. Let each layer mean something.
  • Bring in nature. Plants, flowers, and natural materials like wood or clay ground us in the moment and remind us of life’s natural flow.
  • Use scent. Essential oils, candles, and incense, the scent is powerful. Choose one that reflects the mood you want to cultivate.
  • Tell your story. Frame photos, display mementoes, and let your home reflect your journey, not perfection, but presence.
  • Invest in blinds. Blinds are a great way to add an extra touch to a room while adding a bit of texture, with Roman blinds being a great choice.

Final Thoughts

Your home is more than a place you live. It’s where you rise and rest, cry and dream, let go and begin again. In midlife, as we rewrite our stories, choosing how we live becomes part of the legacy we leave.

So whether you’re drawn to the minimalism of Scandi calm, the joyful clutter of boho vibes, the fairytale beauty of cottagecore or a blend of it all, let it be yours. Let it evolve with you. Let it support the woman you are now and the one you are still becoming.

Because creating a home aligned with your values, your energy, and your seasons? That’s not just good design, it’s deep, intentional living.
