6 ways to spruce up your outdoor space this season

As we’re in full swing into Autumn, what better way to welcome the colder weather and darker evenings than refreshing your home decor?

Although redecorating for autumn primarily takes place inside the home, it’s becoming increasingly popular to extend those cosy, seasonal touches to outdoor spaces as well.

Below, I share budget-friendly ways to add a splash of autumn to your front door to welcome in the new season:

Decorate with an autumn-inspired wreath

A wreath doesn’t have to be for Christmas – it also makes a great addition to your door during autumn. If you want to get creative, creating a wreath from scratch can also be a fun-filled activity that can be done by gathering a variety of foliage on your next autumnal walk.

For an autumn-inspired wreath, utilise dried grasses, wheat, dried flowers, pine cones, and dried berries. Aim to go for a more rustic appeal than what you would typically see for a Christmas wreath. Fallen leaves and dried-out flowers are a great way to add some additional colour and bring autumnal cheer to your front door.

Repaint your front door for a more rustic vibe

If you want to commit to your autumn theme, a new lick of paint can be used to complete the look. A mustard or burnt orange colour is an ideal way to create a warm rustic and welcoming vibe, which ties perfectly into the autumnal theme.

Add a splash of colour with potted plants

Large potted plants are a perfect way to add an autumnal flare to your front door. Try and utilise matching pots to create a symmetrical design, which will be particularly effective and create a warm and welcoming appearance.

To keep in line with the autumnal theme, your colour scheme is important – choose plants and flowers that have fiery and warm colours, such as reds, burnt oranges, and yellows. Warm and fiery-coloured foliage is the best way to bring the fall theme to your front door.

Some top picks for plants and flowers to complete your autumnal theme include pansies, violas, chrysanthemums, cyclamen, and dahlias. When it comes to choosing your pot or container, terracotta or wood are perfect for creating a rustic, autumnal vibe. Woven baskets also work well for this theme.

Utilise hanging baskets if you are low on space

Not everyone has lots of floor space to add plants around their front doors. But the ideal solution to this is to add hanging baskets to decorate your doorway this autumn. Use the same plants listed above, and add them to a hanging basket to create a colourful and homely entranceway.

Utilise outdoor seating for a cosy feel

Create a cosy and welcoming vibe on your porch by utilising outdoor seating. Benches and seating with a more rustic feel, such as wooden chairs or benches can be used to tie into the theme. Remember, autumn themes encompass being warm and inviting, so create a cosy vibe using plenty of cushions and blankets. Either a neutral or fiery colour scheme will work well for capturing the vibe.

Add some pumpkin spice to the front of your home

Of course, one thing we all associate with autumn is pumpkins. The classic symbol of Halloween festivities, pumpkins can make the perfect addition to your autumn-themed front door area.

The problem with using real pumpkins is that they begin to rot fairly quickly – this is why it’s becoming increasingly popular to purchase faux, ornamental pumpkins to decorate front doors with, to avoid having to replace them.

If you have stairs leading up to your front door, try adding pumpkins of different sizes on each level as you make your way up the staircase. Symmetry works well here, adding pumpkins on both sides of the steps, should you have sufficient space, of course. Alternatively, try stacking pumpkins of different sizes on top of one another to create layers and depth.
