5 ways to master the Art of Hygge at Home

As Autumn sets in with its cold, grey mornings and the sun disappears a little bit earlier each day, beat the Autumn blues this season and take out time daily for ‘hygge’. Being a Scandinavian (Norway to be exact), Hygge is something that I am very familiar with and have been practising for years.

What is Hygge you ask?

Hygge is the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simplest pleasures in the cosy company of friends and family. It’s the warm feelings that are conjured up with the thought of Christmas but enjoyed all year round. It’s the art of creating a warm and inviting space for friends and family to linger together, sharing in warm food, drink and conversations. Yet, it’s also the enjoyment one finds in curling up to a good book on the couch with a hot cup of tea.

“Tis the season to get cosy!”

You experience it when you are able to be fully present in the moment, and feel content and at ease. Hygge often happens when you are together with the people closest to you, your nearest and dearest; people with whom you can be open and sincere, where you don’t have to pretend to be anything besides who you are.

1. Get some cosy throws

Snuggling up on the sofa is a lot cosier when you’ve got soft throws on hand.

2. Light Candles

3. Keep the hot drinks coming

Make your tea kettle your new best friend. My favourite is Yorkshire Biscuit Tea with brown sugar, full-fat milk and oat milk – so comforting and soothing! Not a tea person? Cocoa or coffee will also do the trick.

4. Set the table

Time with family or friends, especially while sharing a great meal, is essential to the hygge philosophy, so you’ll need a great dining table and tableware.

5. Relaxing Music

Music is a big part of hygge …and it must be relaxing.
